REFUGE. A safe place you run to for protection, comfort, to escape trouble.
What is your refuge?
We each have our go-to’s. A friend, work, media, our home, a role or position (whether as a mom, ministry, or work related), exercise, coffee, … sugar! While these are good gifts to enjoy, they all fail us. God is our only reliable refuge.
What people, places, things do you run to for comfort and security?
“For God ALONE, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He ONLY is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a REFUGE for us.” Psalm 62:1-2, 8, ESV
When God is our refuge, we turn to Him when we experience stress and trouble. We continue to remember who He is and praise Him, and his joy and strength carry us.
Try this exercise, filling in the blanks (adapted from Habakkuk 3:17-19):
Though the ____ should not blossom,
nor there be ____,
the ____ fail,
the ___ yield no ___,
the ____ be cut off,
and there be no ____,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
I will take joy in the God of salvation.
God, the Lord, is my strength.
Take a moment to talk with God about anything you have turned to for refuge besides Him. Thank Him for the good things He has given you. Trust Him with the things you wish you had but don’t.
And affirm in prayer, “You are my only Refuge!”
