We never know where conversations with our children will take us! And what we will learn!
My eleven-year-old daughter saw something curious out the window while I was driving, and wanted to know what it was. I invite you into our little adventure!
She typed out part of our conversation for you:
“Mom, there’s a taco on the end of that bike that’s being pulled by a cow!” I exclaimed.
“What?” said Mom.
Listening and asking questions are terrific ways to show love in everyday life! Listening is such a gift, but it is often hard to give others. It goes against our self-contentedness and desire to get things done. Listening requires intentionality and practice; it takes a little effort to mentally and relationally connect with another person! I’ve named our home Haven. It’s a safe place we return to from daily life to find rest and mutual care. It’s a haven where we can be authentic with our real selves and emotions. We can make choices to create a trusting and safe environment in our homes.
Imagine this little experience with me a moment…
I went to the top of the stairs yesterday and called out, “Ellie, do you remember what you needed to do this morning?”
“What?” came the reply.
I repeated the instructions. Pause. There was this staticky radio noise coming from her room, which I recognized as coming from her Our Generation mini doll car.
