Our Home, Haven {Home, Part 3}

{Home is the starting place for lived-out-love, a place where the needs of the whole person are cared for.  This post explores meeting emotional needs.}

I’ve named our home Haven.  It’s a safe place we return to from daily life to find rest and mutual care.  It’s a haven where we can be authentic with our real selves and emotions.  We can make choices to create a trusting and safe environment in our homes.

Reading Scripture Relationally

A friend asked me recently, “how do you read Scripture…?”  The first thing that came to mind is that I read it relationally and for the heart.  In relationship, we come to know another and be known.

God desires relationship with us (take a peek at my previous post, Love is Relational, for more on this).  And as we grow in relationship with God, knowing Him and His love for us, we naturally grow in loving and relating with people.

Love is Relational

Love is relational, in its very nature.  In relationship we know and are known.  As we get to know someone, we want to know who they are are and let them know us.  Love is expressed in the context of relationship.  Relational love includes things like noticing people, listening, asking questions, sharing of your heart and selves, and responding.

Love…powered by sticky notes? {Love is intentional}

Love is intentional!  Love notices people, sees needs, reaches out, responds, takes action … and follows up on the intent to do so!  Love is not passive or disengaged.  With loving actions and responses, we change the course of our futures, and that of other people as well (it makes a difference!).

Earlier this summer I jotted in my journal: “Intentionality:  How can we reach out?  Show love?  Create beauty?  Create fun?  (Invite friends over.)”  These good things don’t just happen by accident in our lives.  They happen when we are thoughtful and imagine the possibilities, then follow through and take action to make that which is good and loving happen!

For me, sticky notes help me be intentional about all sorts of things.  (I also like Google Keep on my phone, as it’s great for making lists or notes wherever I am.)

Love Creates Beauty!

Love sees people and life honestly, and engages in constructive and beautiful ways that make a difference.  This difference impacts both the people living out of love, and all the people their lives touch.

I use the word “beauty” broadly, to include interactions, kind gestures, thoughtful details and plans, details that combine to create an hour or day … any sort of thing we can do in a creative and beautiful way!  Our choices to pursue beauty and goodness make all the difference in who we become and how we live out our days.
